You could get plenty of space on HD-DVD if you wanted to back stuff up. I seriously doubt anyone is going to use blu-ray over alternatives for data storage. There are plenty of cheaper ways to back up your data.

Blu-rays play high definition files. idk why you think they wouldn't. Blu-ray is a physical storage medium. It plays MPEG 2/4 and VC1 files.
If you get those files, and play them on a computer; they will look just like the blu-ray. If you put them on any other non-blu-ray storage format that can be read fast enough, they will still look and sound the same.

If a game sells really well, it is probably a great game. Look at games that sell over 1 million copies, and only a few of them aren't really that good. (I don't think any movie games have sold that well...)
That said, a game that doesn't sell well can still be considered great. Phantom Dust was one of the best games released on the Xbox, and is one of the only original xbox titles i'd still go back and play (I would a lot more if I had my old saves). I don't know many people who...

let's compare two games running on the same engine designed to be multi platform on the 360 (gears 1 and gears 2) to two games with platform specific engines that have been in development since before the launch of any of the next gen consoles (resistance 2 and KZ2).
Far Cry 2 and Gears 2 are comparable to KZ2 on every level, especially considering that they've had fractions of the development time.

HD-DVD was not inferior. It was smaller, but it was a completely finished format on release, unlike blu-ray. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were almost completely comparable otherwise aside from cost, which went to HD-DVD.
they balanced out quite nicely, and neither was really "better". One did have a lot more studio support, and that's where blu-ray won. Not in features or performance.
They are making money this gen? They've been making money for a good while. They're still in debt from the original xbox and the 3 year extension, but they are digging their way out of that hole.

It's not doing that good either. The system is just too costly to produce. That's where sony screwed the pooch this gen. They put them in a position where they would have to be at a price disadvantage by putting so many features in their system.
I could tape a pair of scissors to my 360 and say there's not a device like it either because it plays games and cuts paper.
